The following is our itinerary for the IBBA trip to Costa Rica. We will be visiting two working butterfly farms with fun and adventure along the way.

Costa Rica Itinerary

Nov. 2nd: All folks arrive this day, hopefully on flights arriving before 2 PM, transfer to the beach at a Papagallo/Coco/Playa Hermosa. The evening will be spent relaxing at pools, or beach. Dinner, bed and then awake to start our tour!

Nov. 3rd and 4th: We travel to the East today up into the mountainous center of Costa Rica. (Lunch somewhere on the way, or at hotel once we have arrived). Our destination is Borinquen, a very picturesque area of Rincon de la Vieja. We will spend 2 nights here, the area is known for birding, trails lead to numerous waterfalls, mud pits and hotsprings are in the area as well. We will hike into the forests and hopefully set up our lights at night to see what insects we might attract in. Activities abound and are optional, but relaxed travellers can simply lounge in the pools and hot tubs or at the lodge, if preferred.

Nov 5th and 6th: Today we travel North To visit the farm site and properties of El Bosque Nuevo Butterfly Farm. Tours of the breeding facilities and tours through the farm continue until mid-afternoon. We then depart for Rio Celeste Hideaway resort on the slopes of gorgeous Volcan Tenorio. Spending the remainder of the 5th and all day the 6th in this fantastic location. Rich tropical forest, volcano fed rivers and waterfalls, make this area a must for us. Rich diversity in both plant and animal life is a highlight, and our treks will focus on seeing both sites, and these wonderful creatures.

Nov. 7th and 8th: We depart this morning for another well known volcanic are in Costa Rica; Volcan Arenal, and the local town of La Fortuna. Here we will visit Glenns’ butterfly exhibit, The Butterfly Conservatory, and hopefully see some of the volcanic park as well. Spending 2 nights here allows us to look at some adventure tours the next day, including ziplining and canyoning, and for those with less enthusiasm for the tree tops there is a possible visit to the sloth research center or other fantastic venue.

Nov. 9th: Travel today takes us back onto the pacific slope, and through the town of Canas, here we may partake in a laid back river rafting tour focused on local wildlife. This area is very rich in birds, and the guides are experts at pointing out the wildlife that we are seeing. After this stop, we continue to La Pacifica lodge to spend the evening.

Nov. 10th: We depart for Liberia this morning. Some folks might choose to depart (hopefully at flights at 11am or a little later) this day, and some may elect to stay with us in Costa Rica for our optional 3 night 4 day Coastal adventure trip.

November 10th, 11th, 12th: After we have seen off our friends that are heading home, the folks that are on the PCT travel to the picturesque Pacific coastline of Costa Rica. Our final destination is yet to be finalized but we are looking at numerous all inclusive resorts from Papagallo to Tamarindo and all points in between. We will be staying along the coast for 3 nights, activities abound!, Snorkeling (Don’t forget to bring some gear as prices are outrageous for rentals) swimming, lounging and relaxing. For those with a more adventuresome mindset we can look at fishing or diving, these activities would come with extra charges, paid directly to the vendor. All transfers and travel, all lodging, all food, and resort fees are covered in this trip price. What is not covered (unless by an all inclusive package) are alcoholic beverages from the resort, and any extracurricular activities not covered by said resort fees.

November 13th: checkout and return to Liberia for departures (please try to schedule departures for 11am or later if possible).
